Hashtag culture is very important, especially to Instagram and Twitter. Those are really the two places that it massively over-indexes. It’s an incredible way to get discovered.

If you’re asking “How do I get my hashtag going”, you might be in for a surprise with my reply. I have the #AskGaryVee hashtag, but it’s really a way for me to gather questions, as well as create a community that people can talk to each other on. For a campaign, it’s different. You need to understand two things. One, hashtags are not ownable. Maybe some of you didn’t get it, so I’ll say it again: hashtags are not ownable. It is insane to me that people in 2015 still think you can own a hashtag. I walk into a lot of brand meetings where people will say things like “Let’s own the #GetEm hashtag.” My usual response is: what the hell are you talking about?

First and foremost, any hashtag you create could be taken tomorrow by someone else and used differently. If you can remember all the way back to 2009, Skittles put out a hashtag and ended up with a lot of really crude things on their hashtag. Even worse, Skittles made their homepage a feed of that hashtag, where everything that was posted using it showed up. Yikes. It still happens today.

So, how do you optimize hashtags for a campaign?

Flip it. Instead of trying to own or establish a hashtag for a campaign, look at hashtags that are trending and very popular on the two main platforms already and try to figure out how to reverse into them by putting out your piece of content, storytelling. Ride the wave. Be creative.

  1. Wow this episode was full of so many nuggets and key information.

From practical steps like ride the wave of a hash tag I'm literally doing that now in 2019. Also to the feedback you gave the young man asking how does he stop being a people pleaser and you said simply thats not the problem the problem is you don't ask for the biz. That distinction is so huge and it did a lot for me. For some reason.

What I think could be better from this episode would have been to have people Twitter / IG handles when they are in the vid. Q $ A IS YOUR MONEY MOVE.

QOTD: Im scared of a lot of sea creatures stingrays, jelly fish, sharks etc. And I'm sure if be scared of more animals just can't think.

  2. Animals do not scare me, like none of them so that is my answer to your #QOTD, but I wanted to comment on the book you will eventually write "The Human Empire"… when you get there, I want to be a part of it, writing it, editing it, or quite possibly inspiring it because I might write something about it first 🙂 Thinking of the long game

  3. snakes… wild and poisonous ones
    pokemon… adictive ones
    humans… weirdest animals ever
    sharks… hungry ones

Yeah, Humans! All very nice and so, but there lives this capacity for destruction and illogical negativity in those things…

  4. #QOTD: bears man. Fuckin' bears.
I can't outrun it, which is normally fine, since I'm also great at climbing trees, but I can't out-climb a bear either. If it wants me dead, I'm dead.
That being said I have a way with most animals and know enough about bears that I'm confident I could make friends with one or get away without a chase ensuing. If not, at least it's a cool (if unpleasant) way to die.

  5. Hey Gary Vaynerchuk, Im real late to your wisdom and have been cramming all your podcast in over the last few weeks. Im a big sports guy and from New Zealand and I watch a lot of college football and basketball, NBA ,NFL and so on. Here in New Zealand our sport system is terrible where our talent gets stuck here in New Zealand and the sportmen dont get the opportunity to play in countries where their choice of sport is at it's higher level. Kids here dont have the opportunity and dont know of or have options. That where I come in my company is High School Top 200 and I rank the Top 200 HIGH SCHOOL player in the country for rugby to give players a platform to show their talents. Im building towards adding 12 sports under that in the next 7 years and I want my company to be a recruiting company basically for the country. Any thoughts or advice on how to keep the momentum in exploring into the other sports and making money from it to build my empire

  6. One of my fave episodes, working to market for a retail company where I've worked for about 5 years already and so excited about your ideas for retail.
The creepiest animal, but really it's and insect, is a spider. I hate cats too.
